A jersey worn by Wayne Gretzky in the 1986 NHL Stanley Cup playoffs sold for $206,021 in Classic Auctions’ latest catalog sale this week. It’s now the second highest priced hockey jersey ever sold at auction, trailing only the $1.275 million paid in 2010 for Paul Henderson’s 1972 Summit Series clinching shirt.
The jersey has been video-matched to Gretzky wearing it in 1986 playoffs during the Smythe Division final against Calgary, when the Flames upset the two-time Stanley Cup champs.
In all, the auction generated $1.8 million in sales.
Classic sold the first portion of noted collector Simon Bourque’s historical pre-war hockey card collection, considered the best in existence. Two of Bourque’s sets sold for over $100,000. A 1911-12 Imperial Tobacco C55 PSA-Graded Complete 46-Card Master Set, the current finest and all-time finest PSA set, sold for $119,969 and his 1923-24 William Paterson V145-1 PSA-Graded Complete 40-Card Set, including the famous Bert Corbeau card and also the current finest and all-time finest PSA rated set, brought $118,441.
More than a dozen Hockey Hall of Famers appear in the 1933-34 Canadian Gum V252 set Bourque owned. The very challenging set also includes cards of Howie Morenz, Aurele Joliat and King Clancy among its 50 subjects. It sold for a final price of $57,081.
Historic trophies and rings also drew a crowd of bidders. Major Frederic McLaughlin’s 1934 Chicago Black Hawks Stanley Cup Championship Sterling Silver Trophy, sold for $30, 216.
Ed Van Impe’s personal collection was in the Classic sale. One of the first major Philadelphia Flyers collection offered at auction, it included a 1974-75 Stanley Cup Championship Ring which sold for $27,469.
